Typically, poker is played with a deck of cards, though other versions allow players to draw new cards. In most cases, the deck is the standard 52-card English deck. During the game, players evaluate their hand and compare it to the rest of the deck. The goal is to win a pot by having the best hand.

Some forms of poker idn play have a single betting round, while others have several. In each round, the players must bet, fold, or call a bet in order to make it to the next. In some variations, the pot is divided between the highest and lowest hands. For example, in Seven Card Stud, the pot is divided between the player with the highest five-card hand and the player with the lowest four-card hand. In most modern poker games, a player must make a forced bet, also called an ante. This is usually in the form of a blind. In a fixed-limit game, the amount of the forced bet is defined and is standard. These bets are placed before the cards are dealt, giving the players something to chase.

Some variations of poker do not consider flushes or straights, and award the pot to the lowest-ranked hand. Other games do not award a pot to the best hand, but rather to the highest-ranking four-card hand. There are other forms of poker with more complicated rules, such as “Hold ’em,” which requires players to bet based on the hand rank.

In a few forms of poker, the dealer shuffles the cards before dealing them to the players. This process is called a “deal” and can be performed by the player to the left of the button. The button is a white plastic disk, which identifies the player’s position at the table.
